Ali Phi a computer artist based in Tehran, Iran. His works depict the relation between point, line, plane, light & darkness. He is the founder of Nullsight, a media lab & art collective in Tehran, and the festival curator of TADAEX. His works have been shown in Ars Electronica, Mutek AE, Patchlab & Tadaex.

A performance-driven audiovisual project started in 2010. It is concentrated on Persian motifs, the forgotten essence of Iran as an inspirational region and the middle-eastern philosophy. It is an electronic reproduction and sampling of ritual and regional music of Iran, and its rhythms and patterns are the main material of this project in both formats of sound and visual.

QAL: INTERACTIVE AUDIOVISUAL INSTALLATION BY: ALI PHI

The anti-carpet, is an interactive generative audiovisual installation exploring environmental design in futuristic architecture with roots in ancient motifs of carpet. In contrast with traditional carpet, “QAL” is not a single pattern, it is mortal, which dies in one second and it is very easy to create by the motion of hands in real-time affected by light.

At -162°C natural gas becomes liquid. Japan is the top LNG purchaser for Qatar. Although mostly economic, this unique agreement impacts culture, lifestyle, and geopolitics. This kinetic exhibition explores the significance of LNG relations between Japan and Qatar using 40 floating printers that source relevant text and images from the internet.

The project is a collaboration between faculty and students at VCUarts Qatar, Texas A&M University at Qatar, and Tokyo Metropolitan University’s AIIT. Originally exhibited at the W+K gallery in Tokyo, the 2nd edition will take place at the @dohafirestation in Doha Qatar, with the opening reception on March 14th as part of the @tasmeem_doha art and design Biennial. The exhibition runs through the 22nd of March.

SONIC JEEL

A design elective course and pseudo record label exploring systems of sound using small portable synthesizers and sampling. Students perform weekly and the results are recorded, edited and remixed. For Tasmeem, students will perform live loops of their sound experimentations through a narrative journey of beats, rhythms and plot twists.

MINI-GOLF

As part of the Interaction Design course taught in Graphic Design, junior students produced mini golf courses. The students focused on game-play and interaction to guide their design process. Each group of students then used a CNC machine to construct a playable mini golf course.
